Thonon, 24 February 1941
My dear Lore,
I have safely received your letter from the 30th Nov, with the coupon, and I thank you very much for it. It is Ruth who sent me the letter and I received it the 7th February. I've already written 2 letters to you in January and sent them to Ernest. I hope that you've received them in the meanwhile and today it’s my 3rd letter then.
I think that you will be at school still and that all is going well. I am still here and I am well. I have still not received the money that Mr B. sent me but I know that that takes a long time. I've already told you in my last letter that I've received several letters from you dated from the month of October and November and a card too. Aside from that I have also received the letter that you sent to Ernest and it is this which went the fastest. Did your exams go well?
My dear Lore, you ask me if you can help me.

My dear Lore, you ask me if you can help me.
Ah well, yes. Write to Uncle Max. Write to Uncle Max. Tell him that he must go to see Ruth’s brother who lives in the same town as him. Say him that he must seen Ruth’s brother who life in the same town. He is also the cousin of Ernest and in 1938 he invited you to seek permission to go with him. He is too the cousin of Ernest and he has invited you in 1938 to ask a permission for can go with him. I hope that I have not translated these lines too badly and that you have understood everything well. Do I know your friend Edith? I asked you in my last letter to send me a photo of yourself and I hope that you have done so. I am going to put a photo of me in this letter and I hope that you will receive it well. It was taken the 10th February but it is not good. My dear Lore, I would like to ask you to write to me straight away where you will be spending the long holiday, so as I will be able to address my letters to your new address straightaway.

I am going to finish my letter today. This morning I received your card from 15th December and I am happy to know that you are well. I hope that you have had a good holiday. I will be very happy if you have passed your exams.
I often receive letters from our grandparents. Do you know who is the friend of our beloved cousin? It is Edith G. and it seems that she is very happy. I am learning English now with a book that I have borrowed and which is very, very good. It’s called English without a Master. One can learn English without requiring a teacher. When I learn a new word it is first written in English then there is translation in French and then comes the pronunciation. For example:
to decide se decider tou dissaide
The line on decide means that it is necessary to emphasise this syllable.
Do you sometimes go to the cinema? Last Sunday I saw the most beautiful film of my life. It was called Romeo and Juliet and the actors were Norma Shearer and Leslie Howard. The film was very sad but I have never seen one more beautiful.
Do you have any news of Uncle Joe?
Before finishing I would like to ask you pass on a hello to everyone, including Aunt Eileen. Also say a hello to Elaine and Edith and if they want to write a few lines to me I will reply to them in my next letter.
I hope to receive some news from you soon and I give you a really strong hug.
Your Oswald
(In English in original) I think you remember that daddy has made the demand for you to go with Ruth’s brother.
