Loriol, 6 April 1940

My Dear Lore,

I received your letter safely and the one from Roger and I thank you very much for it. It is really chic of you if you want to knit me socks (and not shoes) during the holidays (plural). It is not necessary to send me anything as I don’t need anything. I have already asked you twice up until what date will you be in Bournemouth but you have still not informed me. I hope that you will do in your next letter.

Uncle Max wrote me a card on the 14th March. Since it is impossible to reply to him this week, I ask you to write to him that which I will tell you now; tell him that I have received his card safely and that I am quite recovered. Also give him my new address please.

I know of little news to tell you about here. It is forbidden now to send or to receive registered letters. Yesterday I received a parcel from Mr and Mrs Salomon. They sent me a cake and some butter. –  I have put in a request this week to The Prosecutor (?) of the Republic in Thonon. I asked him to send me 100 francs per month of the money in custody or if it were possible, the whole amount. I have still not received any news of Mr Bergenthal.

I wrote a letter last week to a gentleman for I heard that young people under 18 years old were to be freed.  I described to him the situation of my school years and about me, telling him that we were together at the Hotel School in Thonon, etc.

Did you find Ernst’s address?  I don’t know that I will be able to reply to Roger, except maybe at the end of the month.

That’s all for today. I wish you happy holidays.

Lots of love from Oswald.

My dear Aunt Eileen,

It’s after a long time that I am writing to you today. I think that Lore has always passed on my news to you and it is because I don’t know of anything much to say. I have been at Loriol for almost a month and we are better here than at Arandon. I have been signed up to be a worker(?) since January, but up until now I am waiting…

I hope that these words find you in good health.  A hello to all the family.

Oswald.
