Gretel Sautter nee Ermann as introduced by Lore Confino:

Gretel, sister of Else, wife of Richard Sautter, and mother of Helmut, was born and died in Frankfurt/Main.

No records exist of her early years. What is known is that Gretel and Richard were childhood sweethearts. A story remembered is their daring exploits on the roof of 12 Kluberstrasse, where my grandmother was shocked to see them on her way home. They were married much against the wishes of Richard’s mother (nicknamed ‘the Duchess’) whose anti-Semitic feelings were vociferously and constantly expressed. She made Gretel’s life difficult and cast a dark shadow over her sunny nature. This, and Richard’s womanising, may have contributed to her early death in 1932.
