My grandfather, Isac Ermann, was born in Osann, near Trier, on 4 August 1859. Osann is known for a wine area and the landscape is probably much the same now. There was a thriving and observant Jewish community in my grandfather’s day when his father was a butcher. Nothing is known of Isaac’s early years.
The family Ermann was much in evidence in the Jewish cemetery hidden behind trees
outside the village.
It is possible that Nathan Ermann was a close relative.
The gravestone of Mina Ermann, wife of Jakob, is evidence of vandalism in graveyards practised by the Nazis.
